Does your older BMW have a slight “clunking” noise while shifting gears?  It’s a common problem that plagues many of the older 3 and 5 series cars.

The rear differential is supported by 3 bushings; 2 in the front of the differential housing, and 1 in the rear.  These bushings are a soft rubber that allows for slight movement of the differential housing, offering a soft and quiet ride.  Over time, these bushing wear, and are unable to properly support the differential and allow it move excessively.  This movement causes the audible “clunk” that is heard in the passenger compartment.

The Rear Differential housing is supported by these 3 busings:

2 in the front

Over time, these bushings become worn, and tear into peices :
